“Ng’ona” – Crocodile in Chichewa (the national language of Malawi)

Ng’ona Lodge is an oasis in the African bush. We offer accommodation of a high standard, a campsite with barbeque facilities, and can arrange game drives and other activities in Majete Game Reserve. Situated on the banks of the Shire River, it is common to see crocs sunbathing on the sand banks and rocks below the rapids. These are the same rapids where David Livingstone had to dismantle his boat to continue his exploration of the African interior.

The lodge is owned and was started by Monika and Gerhard, both Austrian by nationality and living in Malawi since 1992.
The original site was called “Majete Safari Camp” and was owned by the Marshall family, who left Malawi years ago. Having known the camp during Marshall’s time, Monika and Gerhard took on the challenge when the site was up for sale.

Our pride is our panorama swimming pool, ideal for cooling off and relaxing. The friendly and helpful staff are from the nearby village. They are offered fair working conditions and generally looked after well.

Monika uses her expertise in cooking to offer guests a variety of delicious dishes.

Travel advice
Ng’ona Lodge is situated 70km southwest of Blantyre. Only the last 18.5km are dirt road but usually in a very good condition the whole year round and can be driven by a normal car with some clearance. Exceptionally during heavy rains a 4×4 might be necessary, but there are always local people willingly assisting visitors should they get stuck in the mud (Adventure!)

Malaria advice
Ng’ona Lodge is directly on the Shire River and only about 100m above sea level. Mosquitos are common, especially during the hot and rainy season and visitors are advised to use mosquito repellant as soon as the sun goes down but also for very early morning bush walks or fishing. The chalets have mosquito nets and powerful fans which will assure you of a good night’s sleep without mosquito bites.
